Knowing what to do right after witnessing or being a victim of crime is difficult. It takes community, resilience, and perseverance just to get back to normal. We're here to help make it a little bit easier.
This checklist is to be used after a high-risk event at the home, to help your family bounce back and give the best report to authorities possible. Make sure the home is safe before using this checklist.
RESET
Give yourself a moment to calm down
Use meditative or grounding techniques
Split up the following tasks with members of the household to work in parallel
SECURE
Sweep the home for anymore intruders
Lock all doors and entryways until police arrive
ASSESS
Ensure your family is safe, check for injuries
Injuries present: provide care and call 911 immediately
Look for damages and missing property in the home
Review camera footage from cellphones or installed cameras
REPORT
Call 911 or non-emergency line - Be as concise and calm as you can manage. Let dispatch control the flow of the conversation, but keep in mind the following details.
What: Title of crime experienced, burglary, assault, etc, and injuries
Where: Your address or approximate location to main roads
Ex: Approximately 100 yards North of Eagle and Fairview
Who: How many suspects of crime, description, and how many injured
When: Approximate times for when the crime started and ended
While waiting for Police to arrive, review what happened using cameras or replaying the events in your head. Rely on additional senses to try capturing fuzzy memories. What did you hear, taste, smell, feel that was unusual, sticks out, or creates a stronger association to the memory?
RECOVER
Our local Police Departments have great resources in crime prevention and victim/witness programs to help after experiencing a crime. Ask the responding officers to get you in touch with them, or use the call sheet on the reverse side.
Spend time talking with your family about the event. Acknowledge each other's fears, concerns and/or resentments. Develop a plan to find strength, stability, and renewed safety in your home. Repairing a home after a crime can also be an important psychological stepping stone, please do not neglect repairs or put them off.
